A Local’s Guide to the Best Parks in Gig Harbor, Washington

One of my favorite things about living in Gig Harbor is how easy it is to get outside. Whether you’re looking for a playground, somewhere to walk the dog, a waterfront picnic spot, or a trail where you can disappear into the trees for an hour, there is a park for just about every kind of outdoor adventure.

As a Gig Harbor local, I thought I’d put together a guide to some of my favorite parks around the peninsula — including my picks for the best playground, favorite dog park, favorite place to walk, and a great spot to cool off during the summer.

🐾 My Favorite Dog Park: Rotary Bark Park

10100 Bujacich Road NW, Gig Harbor

If your dog loves to run and explore, Rotary Bark Park is hard to beat.

Located within a large natural area, the park offers a spacious fenced off-leash area, wooded trails and an open play meadow.

What I love most is that it feels more like taking your dog on an outdoor adventure than visiting a traditional fenced dog park.

There are also additional trails throughout the surrounding property for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

My pick for: Off-leash adventures, wooded trails and getting outside with your dog.

Another Great Dog Park: Tubby’s Trail

1701 14th Ave NW, Gig Harbor

Tubby’s Trail is another local favorite with designated off-leash areas and a convenient location.

💦 Favorite Summer Splash Spot: Skansie Brothers Park

3211 Harborview Drive, Downtown Gig Harbor

You really can’t talk about summer in Gig Harbor without mentioning Skansie Brothers Park.

Located right in the middle of downtown along the waterfront, Skansie is home to Gig Harbor’s seasonal sprayground and is a fun place to spend a sunny summer afternoon.

Grab coffee or lunch downtown, enjoy the waterfront, walk along Harborview Drive and watch the boats come and go from the public dock.

Skansie is also at the center of many of Gig Harbor’s community events and celebrations throughout the year.

It is one of those places that really captures what living in Gig Harbor is all about.

My pick for: Summer afternoons, waterfront views, community events and showing out-of-town guests around Gig Harbor.

🛝 My Pick for the Biggest Playground Day: Sehmel Homestead Park

10123 78th Ave NW, Gig Harbor

If you’re looking for a park with a lot to do, Sehmel Homestead Park is one of my first choices.

The park features a large playground along with sports fields, basketball, tennis, pickleball, picnic areas, gardens, wetlands, meadows and miles of trails.

It is one of those places where you can easily spend a few hours because there are so many different ways to enjoy the park.

You can visit the playground, explore the trails, use the sports courts or simply find a picnic area and enjoy the outdoors.

My pick for: Playgrounds, sports, trails, picnics and spending a full afternoon outside.

🚶 My Favorite Walking Park: McCormick Forest Park

If I’m looking for more of a peaceful Pacific Northwest walk, McCormick Forest Park is one of my favorites.

The park offers scenic trails through wooded areas, along with a creek and beautiful forest scenery.

Dogs are welcome on leash, and the trails are also used for horseback riding.

It feels quiet and tucked away while still being incredibly convenient.

This is the kind of place I love when I just want to get outside, walk beneath the trees and enjoy what makes the Pacific Northwest so beautiful.

⚓ A Playground With a Gig Harbor Twist: Crescent Creek Park

3303 Vernhardson Street

Crescent Creek Park is another great local option with a beautiful setting and a playground inspired by Gig Harbor’s maritime history.

The Maritime PlayZone is an inclusive playground featuring accessible play elements and a fishing-vessel-inspired play structure.

Surrounded by mature trees with picnic areas and Crescent Creek nearby, the park has a classic neighborhood-park feel.

My pick for: Playground time, picnics and enjoying one of Gig Harbor’s established community parks.

🌊 Favorite Downtown Waterfront Park: Skansie Brothers Park

Yes, Skansie gets two categories!

For me, no Gig Harbor park guide would be complete without calling it one of the best places to simply sit and enjoy the harbor.

Its downtown waterfront location makes it one of Gig Harbor’s most recognizable gathering places.

Bring a coffee, grab a bench and watch the fishing boats, sailboats and paddleboarders move through the harbor.

This is also one of my favorite stops to recommend when someone is visiting Gig Harbor for the first time.

🌲 A Hidden Nature Walk: Harbor Family Park

This wooded park offers primitive trails and plenty of opportunities for a casual forest walk, bird watching and wildlife spotting.

It is simple, quiet and a great option when you want nature without playgrounds or sports fields.

My pick for: Exploring, bird watching and peaceful wooded walks.

🌿 A Downtown Nature Stop: Donkey Creek Park

8714 North Harborview Drive

Donkey Creek Park is a small natural area near the Harbor History Museum, and I think it is one of downtown Gig Harbor’s underrated little stops.

A gravel trail connects through the area near the museum, and the park is known for the salmon that return to Donkey Creek.

It is an easy stop to combine with a walk along the waterfront, a museum visit or lunch downtown.

🎵 A Smaller Park Worth Knowing: Shaw Park

4404 Borgen Boulevard

Located in Gig Harbor North, Shaw Park is a smaller neighborhood park worth knowing about.

It features an open lawn, benches, a wooded loop trail and mounted musical instruments.

It isn't one of Gig Harbor's huge destination parks, but that's part of its charm.

Why I Love Gig Harbor Parks

One of the things I appreciate most about Gig Harbor is the variety of outdoor spaces available throughout the community.

We have waterfront parks where you can watch the boats, forests where you can walk beneath towering evergreens, playgrounds and sports fields, off-leash areas for dogs, and smaller neighborhood parks that are fun to discover.

To me, that variety is a big part of what makes Gig Harbor such a special place to call home.

Whether you already live in the area, recently arrived or are simply visiting Gig Harbor, exploring the local parks is one of my favorite ways to experience the community.
